You might know Harm Edens from TV programs such as 'Dit was het nieuws' and 'Hart tegen Hart'. Harm is now 63, and he has been moved by the state of the world his entire life. “As a child, I saw a starving little boy in Biafra on TV, then the carpet bombings in Vietnam, the ‘Limits to Growth’ report by The Club of Rome, and later, as a TV producer, the melting glaciers on Spitsbergen. It is that experience in particular that led me to dedicate the majority of my daily work to creating a better, sustainable world. But lately, I’ve been thinking more and more: things are only getting crazier in the world. We are consuming ourselves to death, we hurl insults at each other, we are turning to the right and becoming coarser and granting each other less and less, people are being replaced by AI, while AI is destroying the world even further through its massive energy consumption.”
Harm wants to discuss this with the audience. “Do you really need that air fryer, Henk? You already have three winter coats, Josien, do you really need a fourth one?” In a cheerful tone and with plenty of humor, Harm takes people through the idiocy of our collective behavior and points out how things can be done differently and better, without losing the fun.
For that is the very core of Harm’s existence: do everything with pleasure. “I grew up in a joyless family, where nothing was celebrated, nothing was enjoyed, where humor did not exist, where I was not seen. These experiences have shaped me into who I am: someone who faces the idiotic life with a great deal of humor, remains optimistic (mostly, anyway), and enjoys life as much as possible. That is why I also talk about that formative side of my life.”
“It will be an evening full of uncomfortable truths, clarifying insights, and above all, a lot of humor. Because if nothing else is left, we will at least go into the abyss together laughing.”
